Dr. Gary Behrend was born in Fairfax, Virginia. Before entering the dental profession, he trained as a physical anthropologist and participated in several archeological excavations in the lower Illinois valley. He attended the North Carolina School of Dentistry, graduating in 1987. Thereafter, he served in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps for six years, including a residency at Portsmouth Naval Hospital and two years as the dental department head aboard the USS Austin (LPD-4). He completed two years of specialty training in endodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas. He has been in practice as an endodontist in Raleigh for twelve years.

Gary and his wife Susan live in North Raleigh and have three children and two spaniels. Gary is a Civil War Reenactor and a corporal in the 2nd Rhode Island Regt., Co.F, US Volunteers.

Dr. Behrend is a member of the American Association of Endodontics, the American Dental Association, the North Carolina Dental Society and the Raleigh/Wake County Dental Society. He is an active member of and past president of the Tar Heel Endodontics Association.
